An 19 y/o sorority girl presents to the college's free clinic with vaginal itching and discharge for about a week. She has had multiple partners and fears she might have an STD. A speculum exam shows copious green, foul smelling discharge and a wet mount shows tear drop shaped trophozoites swimming about on the slide.
What is the diagnosis and what is the treatment?
This is a classic case of trichomonas vaginalis. Multiple sexual partners with vaginal discharge drives you towards a sexually transmitted infection. The organisms are described as "pear shaped" on light microscopy.
